Why use these?

As a mum of 6 homeschooled children here in the UK, I’ve tried and tested a small variety of phonics resources over the years.

(When you teach that many children to read, you become a phonics detective – and occasionally a referee – please tell me why siblings hate each other one min and are besties the next!)

Firstly, one pattern I noticed, especially with smaller notebooks, is a lack of meaningful repetition. Not repeating the same worksheet until we are all ready to pull our hair out (or in my kids cases, each others hair!) – but rather not enough time spent on each stage.

Often phase 2 phonics and phase 3 phonics are introduced and then ticked off. Like literally one page worth sometimes!

Usually this is more noticeable in reception phonics and year 1 phonics, when children have learn the alphabet and are now trying to understand how phonics work and beginning to blend words.

More early reading practice is needed to really solidify that foundational knowldge.

Days of the week learning is an exciting milestone for little ones.

Whether you’re a homeschool parents or a teacher in a classroom, teaching children the days of the week can be fun and engaging. It’s so nice to see the kids faces light up when it finally starts making sense to them!

In this post I share with you some FREE printable worksheets to help teach Days of the week in a fun way. Whether that’s worksheets, charts or posters to make learning easier.

We found this song on YouTube which the kids enjoyed.

The free printable includes colouring activities as well as cut and paste and more.

As always I’ve tried to keep it printer friendly whilst still making it colourful and cute.

Teaching tips:

Use repetition! – When teaching/learning anything, repetition is key. That’s also true for learning days of the week.

They need reviewing daily whether that’s during the morning routine or reading/circle time.

Add movement! – This is always a fun one. Kids love to get their bodies moving so maybe you could get the kids to jump/dance/clap with each day of the week.

Make it relatable! – Making each day “come to life” by talking about what happens on each day can help give the children a sense of what it means. e.g. Wednesdays we go kickboxing.

Teaching doesn’t have to be boring.

With a mix of posters, activities, charts, games, songs etc the kids will get the hang of it in no time!

30 Cheap or Free Summer Activities for Kids

Summer activities for kids are at the top of my list when the summer holidays are looming.

As a homeschool mum, I realised a little late that the holidays are already here! (Oops!)

Thinking about the summer holidays sends my brain straight into panic mode, “how on earth will I keep the kids entertained without losing my sanity, my patience or my pay check?”

We try not to take a full 6 weeks break from our homeschooling (because, well chaos), but I do like to have a plan. Because let’s be real, very rarely do things go to plan. You never know when you’ll need to pull out an emergency activity to keep the kids from strangling each other. (Please tell me I’m not the only one breaking up fights almost daily!)

So I made a FREE “summer activities for kids” printable. Somethings the kids can colour as they complete each activity – because there’s nothing more satisfying than checking something off your list – especially when that list is full of fun, screen free activities am I right?

4-Week Summer Learning Activities

Summer Learning Activities need to be fun, engaging and educational.

If you’re anything like me, then I know you’re looking for a fun way to keep your kids learning throughout the summer holidays/break.

These 4 week summer learning activities are packed with educational activities for kids aged 4-7 years. Perrfect for, but not exclusive to, homeschooling families, preschoolers and Pre K students.

Summer holidays are fast approaching which means the kid need some activities lined up! (Let’ be real, it’s mainly to help keep our sanity.)

I’ve created these 4 week summer learning activities (although I prefer to call it a summer learning challenge to get the kids excited) for the kiddies to help keep the kids minds active in a fun, low pressure way.

Simply download this summer learning activities free printable and get started.

Each week there’s a new theme meaning by the end of the 4 weeks your little genius has completed 4 different topics in a fun engaging way.

Keep the boredom low and the learning high.

Activities include getting outdoors, creativity and a bunch of fun.

Perfect for ages 4-6 years. Honestly even PreK could benefit from it.

Each week comes with 6 free printable worksheets, 1 for each day and an overview of the week to track progress.

The activities are simple yet engaging. The point is to have fun, not to do a bunch of work.

Week 1:

Week 1 is all about Nature.

“Become a Nature Detective”

This includes grabbing your free printable worksheets, a clipboard and some pencils/crayons and heading outdoors. (You know when it comes to kids there needs to be at least one outdoor activity.)

Encourage your kids to be mindful of the nature around them by observing, collecting, having fun and creating with nature.

Week 2:

Week 2 is all about science.

Summer learning activities need to be fun! So this week we are encouraging children to get their brains working by giving maths a go.

Topics include:

Drawing and adding shapes
Finding odd numbers
Recognising and completing patterns
Step counting adventure
Having fun with dice

Week 4

Week 4 is all about writing.

“Become a Writer”

In this weeks free printable, we are asking kids to get their thinking caps on. with a bunch of writing prompts to encourage creative writing.

Writing prompts include:

A Magic door
A pet dinosaur
An awesome aeroplane
The best day
Invisibility

Tips:

This activity is not a one size fits all kinda thing. So although I’ve given an age range, that’s definitely more of a guide.

If you think your child is finding it really easy you could ajust it slightly to make it more difficult.

So, add in another dice. Or ask them to write more than a few words per writing prompt question.
Maybe ask them to label the bug.

You get the idea. That way they don’t miss out of the fun and are still using this as a learning opportunity.

Lines of Symmetry worksheets are some of my favourite things to teach with. Especially if you’re using a mirror to show how it works.

I actually remember when I learnt about lines of symmetry in school and I really loved it. I’m not sure if I’ve passed that love down to my kids but I what I can say is that love is still there! haha

FREE Lines of Symmetry Worksheets

These worksheets have been designed to help teach your kids the lines of symmetry using geometric shapes or 2d shapes. Your child will need to draw lines of symmetry, whether thats horizontal, vertical or even diagonal.

Some of the worksheets are designed so that not only can your child draw a line of symmetry, but that they can also colour in the shape so that the pattern is symmetrical too.

These figures with lines of symmetry incorporates art which is always loved by kids!

Lines of symmetry activities are such a fun way to learn symmetry. Simple yet effective learning.

You could use these for year 2/3 students which is grade 1 or grade 2.

Need more Symmetry Worksheets?

I feel like if you used a mirror when working with your child, it would make everything a lot clearer for them. That way they can see exactly how both sides are the same when you place the mirror on the line of symmetry.

And then in turn if they place it in the wrong place they’ll understand why that is incorrect.

I remember using mirrors when I was in school and it really was so helpful!

Also I need to ask, does anyone else remember so much about what happened when they were in school? In particular primaryschool.

I remember how old I was when i learnt certain things (mainly because in my head I can see when and where we were when learning said thing and I remember the teacher so ca figure out my age based of which teacher we had then). I’ve been told I’m weird for remembering things like that but I’m pretty sure it’s normal! lol

Beginning Sounds Worksheets FREE

Free Beginning Sounds Activity Worksheets for Preschool/Kindergarten

Why do you need these Beginning Sounds Worksheet (free by the way)?

Once you start teaching your child phonics, it’s a good idea to help them make the correlation between words and letters. This is where beginning sounds come in.

I’ve created these beginning sounds worksheets free so that you can do just that!

These CVC words worksheets are a great way to introduce beginning sounds to your child.

If your child is young enough to be learning beginning sounds, (take a bite of cake every time I say “beginning sounds” haha) chances are they’re young enough to not really be doing (or at least won’t enjoy) “formal work,” so as always I’ve made sure there is plenty of colouring to be done (and of course this means the worksheets are printer friendly – win!).

These worksheets have an image missing missing letters at the beginning of the word where your child can attempt to guess and then write their own letter.

The last 2 worksheets are a little different. After doing some writing it gives your child an opportunity to do a hands on “game” where they can cut and stick the letters rather than write the beginning sounds.

These kinds of beginning sounds activities for preschool (or kindergarten) are a great way to them to get a better understanding of how letter sounds work.

At this age teaching using activities or games

As always I’ve created these beginning sounds worksheets as a free printable because as parents (and homeschoolers) we already have SO many expenses so it’s always nice when you can get something for free. 🙂

How To Use These Beginning Sounds Worksheets

The first 3 worksheets in this pack are a simple and fun way to teach beginning sounds.

Look at the picture with your child. Ask them to tell you what it is. Ask them “What’s the first sound?”

Then give some wrong examples. The kids usually find this hilarious!

So for “cat” you say, “Is it L, so lat?” “No that doesn’t sound right, hmm what could it be?”

Give them a chance to give their answer. If they are struggling, you could give them the answer. Do these with a few so they can get the hang of it and you will see how they slowly get to grips with it.

You could even play “the wrong sound”, so what is it not – it’s not gat, it’s not vat, it’s cat!

This can make it a little more playful and fun way to learn.

Salah worksheets for Kids

It’s actually embarrassing why I created these Salah Worksheets for kids.

My 6 year old usually prays with her siblings (not always mind you), and she usually asks, “Is it 4, 4?” If it’s Asr for example.

Then recently when we were talking about praying the fardh, sunnahs etc, I was asked ” But how would you even know which ones which?”

Then it hit me.

She hasn’t learnt the rakats yet!

I fell into a sort of panic mode! With the older kids I always made sure to explain each prayer and rakats properly. I guess with the younger kids I assumed they would pick it up since their siblings are praying too.

My bad.

I then quickly sprung into action to create these salah worksheets haha.

Which, she is actually really excited about. She sat next to me as I created them and I would hear a “yay” after a while lol.

Of course I had to make it a little more hands on.

So I opted to make it cut & paste, with plenty of opportunities to colour!

This salah activity worksheet idea came to me when I was wondering how to also incorporate explaining what time of day each salah needs to be prayed.

When it comes to fajr and Isha it’s easier for them to understand.

But the middle 3 prayers can become confusing for younger children, which is where the labelled pictures come into play.

The worksheets about salah are simple, yet straight to the point.

Once they are complete you can even turn them into a notebook, or simply stick up on display.

With the month of Ramadan quickly approaching, I’m sure many parents are trying to prepare themselves and their children for its arrival.

For parents looking to involve their children in meaningful activities during this time, a Ramadan Bingo worksheet can be an awesome and educational choice.

This Ramadan activity not only entertains but also teaches children about simple acts of kindness they can practice to earn rewards during this special month.

Is there any benefit to this Ramadan Bingo Activity?

I don’t think y’all realise how much I love this Ramadan Bingo Activity idea. I felt like an absolute genius when creating this! haha

I guess it didn’t help that my younger kids were oohing and ahhing over it and were excited to have a go at it themselves! My own little cheerleaders! haha Mashallah.

As you prepare for Ramadan, consider incorporating this engaging and educational game into your routine. Just one activity a day. It’s not just about winning the game; it’s about enriching young hearts and minds with the essence of Ramadan.

How to play Ramadan Bingo

It’s really straight forward.

First, cut and make the colour die provided.

Next, you have 2 options. Either: roll the die, whichever colour you land on, that is the colour of your good deed that day.

Colour in the spinner in the colours shown on the page (1 colour per section) and then place a pencil in the middle and spin to see which colour it lands on. You could laminate this to make it more durable.

Scan the Ramadan Bingo worksheet and choose a good deed in the corresponding colour.

Then, you need to complete the task, some are very quick but some can take quite a while to complete!

Finally, once you’ve completed your good deed, colour in the deed you’ve completed.

If you’ve completed all the deeds for that colour, then you keep rolling the die until you land on a colour that stil as incomplete deeds.

One good deed a day means you will complete the Ramadan Bingo Activity Worksheet by the end of Ramadan!
