These counting in 2’s worksheets (for year 1) are a must!

Honestly don’t underestimate the importance of teaching counting in 2’s! It’s an important stepping stone in maths. It will help with things like basic addition/subtraction as well as time tables and more.

Making learning fun is super important, especially for younger children so I’ve created these to be interactive and hands on.

Something as simple as cut and paste activities can take your child’s mindset from “work” to “fun activity”. so it’s a good idea to offer hands on activities where possible.

This download contains worksheets teaching counting in 2’s with both odd and even numbers and the numbers go up to 20 which makes it perfect for year 1 children.

2 Worksheets are a cut and paste activity which is always a BIG hit with kids! This way they are learning something new whilst having fun meaning they are much more likely to retain this new knowledge.

2 of the worksheets are helping Freddy the frog leap over the lily pads in 2’s to help visualise skipping one number in between.

Counting in 2's activity idea

  • Aside from worksheets another thing I did with my children when teaching counting in 2’s was to stick some post its around the room with one number on each post it. so 2, 4, 6, 8, etc and stuck them around the room. We then had a go at running to the next number, whoever got to the final number without making a mistake won! It’s a simple yet effective activity so I would highly recommend!
  • Once they have the hang of it you could slowly introduce the 2 time tables. These posters are perfect to have to help aid them. Just print and hang them in an area your child spends a decent amount of their time. This way they can refer to them as and when they like.

Also as they progress, I would say grab this toy, it is ADORABLE! It’s an awesome fun way to help them understand 2’s in more depth.

Go with the flow

  • Once your child manages to grasp counting in 2s, why stop there? Keep going and move onto counting in 5s then in 10s!
  • But wait, give each section some time. Don’t rush to the next section too early because you’re getting confident.
  • Give your child the time he/she needs to get the hang of it completely so that it’s almost second nature before moving on. – Trust me, I learnt the hard way.
  • To be honest I learnt the hard way with so many things! It’s what gives me the confidence to advise others. Well that and delusion. I took a more – I did this so you don’t have to approach.

Done with counting in 2's, What's next?

Once your child is confident with their 2’s, then and only then should you try to move on. You want to get to the point where it’s almost second nature. That’s when you know it’s not likely they will forget and they can get through them with ease and confidence.

After you’ve taught counting in 5’s and 10’s then you could move on to basic maths.

Teaching basic maths doesn’t need to be difficult or complicated.

There are some really simple and basic things you can do to incorporate maths into your child’s day.

A few ideas:

  • Keep it simple by using everyday objects to teach both counting and sorting. Whether that’s helping sort the laundry or sorting toys into colours/shapes or sizes. And then counting how many per colour.
  • Another simple one is board games. Basic ones like snakes and ladders or ludo etc. Something where the child can count how many steps to move forward. Or even games like Uno which can help with number recognition.
  • Storytelling. Whether that’s through books or made up stories. Finding stories where a character has a little problem solving to do will get your child thinking.
  • Outdoor activities. Get your child outside. How many leaves can you count? Let’s sort the fallen leaves with other similar leaves. Or maybe try games like hop scotch. This post has some awesome outdoor activity ideas.
  • One really fun way to incorporate maths is to do some cooking or baking together. Kids love getting creative in the kitchen and this way you are able to incorporate some maths into their day.
  • Incorporate some counting into your child’s day (while also giving them a sense of responsibility) by asking them to lay the table and count how many placemats or plates or cutlery they will need. And also how many of each per person.
  • Puzzles or building blocks. Puzzles are brilliant to aid problem solving skills which is a much needed skill when it comes to maths. Also games like building blocks or lego are great for teaching shape recognition and even size sorting.
  • Remember consistency is key! Small consistent steps will get you much further than irregular longer strides. The more irregular the learning, the less likely your child will remember what they have learnt.

The use of positive language and patience is super important when teaching children. It can be the difference between a fun, educational, bonding activity and.. well not so much fun.

There are loads of ways to incorporate maths into your routine without breaking the bank. It’s not necessary to go out and buy more toys etc. Try to use what you have, get creative with it. Once you start you’ll quickly get the hang of it.

Are you wondering why on earth I’ve used a pic of some pegs here? lol

Yes! Even pegs can be used to help sort into colours, or even pairs to refresh your child’s knowledge of counting in 2’s. Really simple activities done consistently can make such a big difference.
